Street Art. One more Rome / 5 August 2015 / 5 August 2015

No longer simply a niche issue or fad, Street Art has been perfectly woven into the urban fabric of a city throbbing with renewed desire. Rome no longer offers itself as the capital of archaeology and treasured ruins alone, and a continuing draw for tourists from around the globe, but also as an open-air museum of contemporary art.

Rome is currently the leading Italian city in terms of the number of works by visiting international artists such as Clemens Behr, Herbert Baglione and MOMO, but also Italian – and especially Roman – artists such as Hitnes, Lucamaleonte, Alice Pasquini, Sten Lex Agostino Iacurci and Jerico.

As of spring 2015, a map has been distributed by Rome’s tourist information points and an app called “StreetArt Rome” is available free from AppStore and Google Play (created by Artribune with the support of Toyota and the sponsorship of the city council’s Department of Culture and Tourism; based on your position, the app identifies the works closest to you, calculates the route to take and allows you to create ad hoc itineraries).

Street Art Rome is a non-profit project organised by NUfactory that aims to provide as complete a digitization as possible of mural works in the city of Rome. “The project,” says Francesco Dobrovich, founder of NUfactory and Director of the OUTDOOR Festival, which was established in 2010 and will hold its next edition in October, “aims to digitize works of Street Art through a cataloguing of images, integrated with critical insights on works and artists. Its goal is to position the city of Rome among the leading European capitals in terms of the number of digitized works on the Google platform, following in the footsteps of Paris and London”. Street Art Rome offers dynamic tools and promotes the artistic but also production and curatorial work of artists operating in Rome, through an extensive map of the works and a knowledge sharing network that also embraces critics, video makers, photographers and viewers.
